The PMC MB2S-XBD-P is an ultra-high-end, large-format passive monitoring system designed for the most critical professional audio applications, including mastering, high-end film post-production, and immersive audio mixing (Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D). It combines the standard MB2S monitor with a dedicated, linked XBD bass cabinet, delivering a seamless full-range monitoring experience with exceptional dynamics and headroom.
Dual-Cabinet Acoustic Superiority
The system uses two separate cabinets: the upper MB2S monitor houses the midrange and high-frequency drivers, while the lower XBD cabinet operates as an active extension of the bass line. This design provides several distinct advantages:
- Superior Dynamics and Headroom: By doubling the bass drivers and cabinet volume, the system can handle massive transients and high SPLs (up to 124dB peak) with incredibly low distortion, preventing power compression at maximum volume.
- Enhanced Imaging and Detail: Separating the bass drivers into their own enclosure eliminates physical cabinet vibration interference with the sensitive midrange and high-frequency units, ensuring crystal-clear imaging and microscopic detail.
- Deepest ATL™ Bass Extension: The combined ATL™ length is significantly extended, allowing the system to achieve an articulate, flat frequency response down to an astonishing 17Hz.
Precision Driver Integration
The MB2S-XBD-P utilizes three primary drivers, with two operating the low frequency in the master and XBD cabinets:
- Dual 12-inch Radial™ Drivers: These proprietary drivers feature a massive, heat-dissipating cast-alloy frame and a robust diaphragm. Their high power handling and low thermal compression guarantee consistent sonic performance during extended high-level sessions.
- The PMC75 Midrange Dome: This 3-inch fabric soft dome is the heart of the system, providing unparalleled clarity and natural reproduction of vocals and instruments, with crossover points precisely outside the critical vocal range.
- 27mm Soft-Dome Tweeter: A high-resolution, ferrofluid-cooled tweeter ensures an extended, detailed high-frequency response up to 25kHz.
Passive Flexibility
As a fully passive system, the MB2S-XBD-P requires robust external amplification. The cabinets feature dedicated input terminals, allowing for a range of wiring options:
- Bi-Amping/Tri-Amping: The system is designed to be bi-amplified or tri-amplified using a high-quality electronic crossover to achieve the ultimate control and power matching for each driver stage.
Performance Profile
The XBD version of the MB2S increases the effective bass-loading area and doubles the LF power handling. This results in an additional 3dB of headroom compared to the standalone MB2S and extends the low-frequency response down to 17Hz, providing the scale and authority of a flagship main monitor system in a more flexible, mid-sized footprint.
