Review by Stereonet – Jay GarrettThe Musical Fidelity M6xi builds on the proven analogue design of its impressive ‘si’ series while adding expanded digital inputs and stronger system integration.Additionally, the new integrated draws on Musical Fidelity’s TITAN amplification platform, introduced in 2008. Here, the brand claims 230 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 390 wpc into 4, just nosing past the M6si’s 220 wpc.Fully analogue power supplies are utilised to mitigate high-frequency noise and electromagnetic interference during operation. Meanwhile, a low-distortion Darlington output stage is employed to reduce crossover artefacts and residual distortion. Furthermore, we’re told that an optimised PCB layout helps maintain channel balance and stability.A Burr-Brown stepped attenuator in the pre-amplifier stage is used for precise channel matching, and a pre-out accommodates bi-amping or subwoofer integration. Vinylistas will appreciate that the M6xi, like the M6si, benefits from a phono input that supports both MM and MC cartridges.The new ‘xi’ suffix brings with it TOSLINK, coaxial, USB-C, and HDMI ARC digital inputs, covering most hardwired source scenarios. Additionally, its 5V/2A USB-A output can power an external streamer. Interestingly, Musical Fidelity doesn’t mention which chip it uses for digital-to-analogue conversion. We know the M8xi’s digital skills are based around the Texas Instruments PCM5242, so the M6xi might inherit that.The M6xi’s rear panel also features an RS232 connector for custom integration and a home-theatre bypass input, enabling the amplifier to function as a dedicated two-channel power amplifier within a multichannel setup.The M6xi’s case is available in silver or black and is made from extruded aluminium on the front, sides, and top. Musical Fidelity says this all-metal build helps block electromagnetic interference and keeps the outside looking clean.The Musical Fidelity M6xi costs US$3,799.
